The world has been recently shocked by the death of Nelson Mandela, one of the most widely admired, respected and inspiring public figures in history. During the first term, 3rd year secondary students watched the movie Invictus by Clint Eastwood, and were told to carry out an extended written
project on it, with a set of guidelines given. There were several educational goals to this project: improving the students´ listening and writing skills; learning about an English speaking
country such as South Africa, and about such a valuable personality as Mandela, and finally extending their vocabulary knowledge related to sports and cinema. Sadly, the project´s due date turned out to coincide with the day of
his passing, December 5th, 2013. Repose in peace, Madiba. The world will never forget.

The following are some quotes extracted from projects done by students: “The film is about Nelson Mandela´s story. He is from South Africa and he was the president of the country, but before that he had been in prison for 27 years“. “This is a wonderful film. I love films about real life and for me this is
a very inspiring story
“. Ángel Aramayo.

His main goal is to obtain respect between white and black people. To achieve this, he will use the Springboks, the national rugby team“. “Apartheid was a system where only white people could vote and have privileges“. Théo
Jobbe-Duval.

During the film there were scenes that I liked and some that I didn´t like so much. I think they should have talked more about the life of Nelson Mandela, his family, what people from his village thought about him, etc.” Borja Acedo.

With this story, I learned a lot about South Africa. I enjoyed a lot this story and much more because rugby is present on it. The actors play their roles very well in the movie“. Vitaliy Stepanyuk.
